We’re delighted to announce the launch of our new approach to training starting in April.
All the core training which you are familiar with will remain on our programme including Introduction to Safeguarding Children & Young People, and Working Together to Safeguard Children Training, however we’re also hosting a variety of topic based sessions using some new and exciting training approaches. We think this will be an important way to meet the needs of all learners with a range of different learning styles.
The topic-based sessions will change over the course of the year to include any current learning or practice changes.
In the feedback from Leeds Safeguarding Week 2024 you told us you wanted regular sessions but spread over a longer period to increase the likelihood that you would be able to attend more often. This has led to the decision to use this new topic based approach.
All the session topics will be linked to our LSCP priorities, learning from reviews, findings from audits and learning from inspections. For each session, we will clearly outline where the learning has come from to inform the choice of topic, so you can make the direct connection yourselves.
All sessions will either be delivered by subject experts from across the Partnership, drawing on the wide experience we have in Leeds or commissioned specifically.
Use a team briefing in your next team meeting
We’ve also developed a new resource for your team meetings.
Our ‘Team Briefing’ packages are a series of topic-based resources; videos and audios, all available for you to use in small group sessions, to learn from the content and from each other, as you work through them.
Train the trainer
For those of you who have previously attended our ‘Training the Trainer’ course to enable you to deliver training in your own teams, we think that you may find it useful to touch base with us now and again, to make sure the training you’re offering is still up to date and relevant to your practice. Every six months, we will be offering an MS Teams based 90 minute peer session, to share your thoughts on delivering safeguarding training, working through challenges, and accessing support on any training related issue.
Webinars
Here is a selection of the webinars currently on offer:
CSE hasn’t gone away
Leeds has seen a decline in referrals for Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE). We know, however, that CSE hasn’t gone away. The police, Social Care and specialist services such as Basis rely on frontline professionals to identify those at risk of CSE and to raise their concerns appropriately. This session will explore the current picture of CSE, the trends and risk factors that practitioners need to be aware of in order to keep children and young people safe, and will provide guidance on what steps to take to raise concerns.

Professional curiosity and decision making
The session will consider why so many child/adult safeguarding reviews comment on a ‘lack of professional curiosity’ and why decision making in safeguarding can be so complex. It will use examples from practice to reflect on the skills practitioners need to be professionally curious.
It will consider how professionally curious practice best informs decision making, to keep children and young people safe. This is an opportunity to explore challenges and reflect on how practitioners can think differently about professional curiosity, to improve their practice in the future.
