The safety and welfare of children and young people travelling around the city is paramount and it is important to minimise any risk posed to people using a taxi or private hire vehicles. Leeds recognise that the majority of Hackney taxi drivers and private hire drivers are very professional and carry out their duties with no complaints. However, it is important that there is a process to assess the suitability of anyone applying for a taxi licence and that taxi drivers understand the importance of ensuring the safety and welfare of children and young people that use their service.
Along with the usual checks of suitability, anyone applying for a taxi licence will need to undergo a DBS check on any new application or application for renewal of any licence granted by the council. They will also be expected to undergo training to support their understanding of what to do if they are concerned over the safety and welfare of children and young people.
